INTERNATIONAL MEET ON AORTIC ANEURYSM

06th Jan 2015

Aneurysm of aorta is a bulge on the biggest blood vessel which carries blood to the whole body. This can occur at its origin which is close to the Aortic Valve and Coronary Arteries, at the Aortic arch where blood vessels go to the brain and both arms or in the Thoraco-Abdominal Aorta where blood vessels originate to the organs like kidneys, liver, stomach and intestines. When the Aorta is enlarged more than 1 ½ times its normal, it is called an aneurysm. It can occur in any portion of the aorta, either in the chest or in the abdomen. Approximately about 600,000 – 700,000 people suffer from various types of Aortic aneurysm in India which needs some type of treatment which is mainly open surgical or Keyhole procedure with Endovascular graft. But, today in India we are doing less than 1000 cases; rest of the people die suddenly due to various complications related to that. This meeting is highlighting on the aneurysm which is involving the Aortic Arch and Thoraco-Abdominal Aorta.

Aortic Arch Aneurysm

This can be treated by two methods

  1. Open surgery in younger and patients who are fit. To do operations on the Aortic Arch we have to cool the patient to about 18-20°C and stop the circulation for a short period. During this meeting we are demonstrating newer techniques to reduce the complication of this operation.
  2. Hybrid surgery in patients who are old and who has other problems in the lung, kidneys or other reasons where open operations cannot be done.

Thoraco-Abdominal Aneurysm

Thoraco-Abdominal Aneurysm is one of the most difficult operations in heart surgery. Surgery for this type of aneurysm can be done using left heart bypass or hybrid surgery without use of heart-lung machine. A special technique will be used in this workshop for the open surgery where we do not use blood thinning medicines. This will reduce the bleeding complication and lessen the requirement of blood transfusion. More than 15 Senior Faculty members from different parts of the world like Italy, Belgium,New Zealand, China, Brazil, United States and neighbouring` countries will be delivering lectures on the latest developments. More than 250 Senior Cardio Thoracic Surgeons, Vascular Surgeons, Cardiologists, Interventional Radiologists will be attending this meet which will help them to do the complex aneurysm surgeries successfully in a large number of patients all over the country.
