Prof. Dr. P.V.A Mohandas was conferred with the Degree of D.Sc Honoris Causa by His Excellency Shri M.K. Narayanan – Governor of West Bengal as well as Hon’ble Chancellor of the University of Kalyani at an event held at MIOT International on 24th August, 2013

This special convocation by the University of Kalyani is for recognizing the services rendered by Prof. Dr. P.V.A Mohandas for his country who dreamt and achieved in bringing the same standard of healthcare as in the western countries and for his knowledge of excellence in terms of ethics and being great aspiration to his countrymen.

Along with His Excellency, Shri M.K. Narayanan, Governor of West Bengal others who graced the occasion also include Professor. Dilipkumar Mohanta, Vice Chancellor, Mr. Utpal Bhattacharyya, Registrar and Mr. Kaushik Mukherjee, Development Officer from the University of Kalyani among many others.

Brief Profile of Prof. Dr. P.V.A. Mohandas

Prof. Dr. P.V.A. Mohandas – Founder – MIOT Hospitals & MIOT International, Chennai, born in Palayamkottai, Tirunelveli and obtained his M.B.B.S. Degree, Diploma in Orthopaedic Surgery and M.S. in Orthopaedic Surgery studied in the Madras Medical College and was appointed as a Lecturer in Orthopaedic Surgery in the Madras Medical College. Later, he obtained his M.Ch. in Orthopaedics from the University of Liverpool and was trained under an eminent Orthopaedic Surgeons in London, Switzerland and Germany, came back to India in 1975 and was appointed as Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery in the Kilpauk Medical College in 1975.

He pioneered Hip Replacement Surgery in India and did the first hip replacement in this part of the world in 1975.

He also pioneered AO concept of fracture management in India. In 1984 he became a Trustee of the AO, Switzerland.

For his pioneering work in Joint Replacement Surgery he was awarded “Padmashree” in 1992.

The MGR Medical University, Chennai, conferred on him the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Science and in 1994 the German Society of Trauma Surgeons honored him by making a Fellow of the German Trauma Society.

In 2005 the German Society of Joint Replacement Surgery made him a Fellow of their Association in Heidelberg, Germany. He is the first non-European to get this award.

In 1999 the new premises of the MIOT Hospital was opened with 100 beds which now slowly grown to have 1000 beds.

What was started with single specialty now it is 47 specialties including Organ Transplant Units consisting of Liver Transplant, Kidney transplant, Bone Marrow Transplant and the only Hepato – Biliary – Pancreatic Surgery Unit in the Country.
