3rd Dose - Free Hepatitis B Vaccination Programme which is part of the LIVER 4 LIFE” campaign and Free 1st Dose HEp B vaccination through Tamilnadu CM Comprehensive health insurance scheme – 29th Jan 2012 – at MIOT hospitals.

The Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) was discovered by Professor Blumberg 44 years ago. He developed the first Hepatitis B Vaccine two years later. Unfortunately, even now, 400 million people in the world are chronically infected by this virus. 15-40 % of these individuals will develop serious complications – cirrhosis and cancer. 42 million Indians suffer from Chronic Hepatitis B Infection. HBV is responsible for 60% of liver cancer cases in our country. Vaccination is a very effective method to prevent HBV infection, and thereby chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis and liver cancer.

MIOT Hospitals decided to take up the challenge of creating awareness regarding HBV infection and the value of vaccination. Our “LIVER 4 LIFE” campaign was an initiative to work towards eradicating the infection. We started School Health Programmes and conducted a Health Quiz for schools in the city on the topic “Health awareness and Disease Prevention – The key to a Robust India”. Yellow Ribbon Clubs in schools and the Yellow Brigade will continue to create awareness and will spread the message even in remote parts of our country. Our team continues to develop rapport with Principals and teachers in schools. Our Doctors addressed school children during their morning assembly sessions. Children and teachers found the sessions very useful.

On Sunday, July 31, 2011, we organized a free Hepatitis B vaccination camp. 1,70,000 invitations were sent to the public and 22,070 children in 13 schools were given free coupons. We arranged a Health Exhibition and a free Hepatitis B screening programme as well. Actor, Youth Envoy, UN Habitat, Dr Vikram inaugurated the programme. Over 15000 people were screened and vaccinated.

From Aug 1 – 6, we offered free consultation for all patients with GI and Liver diseases. We saw over 400 patients and offered valuable advice. More than 1500 people were vaccinated during this period. We evaluated and treated those who were infected with the Hepatitis B Virus. These patients are regularly monitored and managed by the team at the MIOT Advanced Center for GI and Liver Diseases.

On Sunday, August 29 2011, we administered the second dose of the Hepatitis B vaccine, and the third dose was given on Sunday, January 29, 2012. This free vaccination camp was organised under the banner “LIVER FOR EVER”. Over 7000 school children and adults attended the camp.

Also people were given the 1st dose for free under the continuing benefits of Tamilnadu CM Comprehensive health insurance scheme.

This dream project of the MIOT Hospitals, Chennai was effectively carried out by its staff. We have reached out to over 16,000 people in Tamil Nadu. MIOT Hospitals through the efforts of the MIOT Advanced Center for GI and Liver Diseases will continue to spread the message that the Liver can be protected from Hepatitis B infection. We will work towards disease eradication and health promotion to build a robust India.
