Past events at MIOT

The Ministry of Health and Medical Services (MHMS), Minister Honourable Dr. Paul Popora Bosawai and the MIOT International Hospital Managing Director, Dr. Prithvi Mohandas, on 24th October 2025, signed the agreement of provision in Nandi, Fiji.

A Milestone in Strengthening Healthcare Collaboration

In his remarks at the signing event, Health Minister Dr. Bosawai said the signing marks a significant milestone in both the MHMS and MIOT shared journey: a signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Health and MIOT, in partnership with our respected India hospital counterparts.

“This occasion stands as a testament to our collective commitment to improving healthcare delivery and patient outcomes in our country.

“Our journey towards this partnership has been guided by a history of fruitful collaboration. Last year’s inaugural meeting laid the foundation for today’s milestone, allowing us to identify shared priorities and the rationale for selecting MIOT as a key partner. The trust and mutual respect built over this period have reinforced our resolve to pursue excellence in healthcare delivery.

“Today’s agreement represents more than a formal partnership. It affirms our mutual dedication to advancing medical care and technology, and reflects our shared aspiration to offer the highest standards of specialist and tertiary care for the people we serve. The collaboration with leading Indian hospitals, renowned for their expertise and innovation, is a strategic step forward in strengthening our national healthcare system”, said Dr. Bosawai.

Commitment to Universal Health Coverage and Quality Care

He stated the Government of Solomon Islands remains steadfast in its commitment to universal health coverage and the provision of advanced specialist care. The government’s policies prioritise not only accessibility but also the quality and sustainability of healthcare services. This MOU aligns closely with the government’s goals by setting a framework for infrastructure development, the enhancement of clinical standards, and the upskilling of the healthcare workforce, especially in specialists’ knowledge, skills and practice in SI.

Upgrading Facilities and Aligning with International Standards

He further stated, the MHMS has set ambitious objectives to upgrade its facilities, raise care standards, ensure robust staffing, and develop advanced specialist services. These efforts are in harmony with the recent WHO Western Pacific Regional Office policy reviews, particularly concerning the prevention and management of non-communicable diseases. “Our alignment with the International standards is to ensure that our progress is both measurable and sustainable”.

Creating a Sustainable Overseas Referral Pathway

“We recognise the ongoing need for referral of complex cases abroad, and we view this partnership as an opportunity to create an economically sound and beneficial referral pathway.
“Our aim is to ensure that every referral translates into meaningful, high-impact outcomes for our patients, and that the process is conducted with transparency and integrity”, said Dr. Boswai.

He highlighted this year the ministry referred two complicated cases: one involving carcinoma of the thyroid with metastasis affecting the jaw, and another of a brain tumour leading to blindness. These cases were referred by the national general specialists at NRH.

A Proven Record of Successful Collaboration

“In the past, we have also benefited from advanced medical treatment at MIOT Chennai, with a record of successful outcomes, including a triple bypass cardiac surgery and a kidney transplant for SI citizen. These experiences highlight the tangible benefits of our collaboration and reinforce the critical importance of continued partnerships for access to specialised care.
“As we move forward, let us reaffirm our commitment to honesty, diligence, and the pursuit of excellence. Together, we can deliver lasting value to our overseas referral health system and, most importantly, to the people who depend on us. May this partnership continue to flourish, bringing hope and healing to all”, said Dr. Bosawai.

He described the MOU is about advancing and saving the lives of the people of Solomon Islands.
