Symposium on A to Z of Haemoglobinopathies 2022

MIOT International conducts a Symposium on A to Z of Haemoglobinopathies Under the aegis of Tamilnadu and Pondicherry Chapter of Indian Association of Pathologists and Microbiologists TNPCIAPM.

Hereditary genetic disorders of the Haemoglobin molecule (“Hemoglobinopathies”) are amongst the commonest genetic disorders worldwide. They are a major public health concern, characterized by either abnormal haemoglobin, as in Sickle Cell Disease or insufficient production of haemoglobin chains, as in Thalassemias. The mainstay of their prevention remains detection of asymptomatic carriers by a stepwise algorithmic approach that includes a detailed clinical history, laboratory techniques such as high-performance liquid chromatography and capillary electrophoresis, along with confirmation by molecular analysis.

Awareness among pathologists and treating physicians is essential to avoid mis-recognition of these cases. This symposium activity will review the role of laboratory methods in the diagnosis of Hemoglobinopathies, the technical challenges therein, followed by a discussion of few interesting cases.
