Total Hip Replacement Surgery

Overview

Total Hip Replacement Surgery
Persistent hip pain can gradually make even simple activities—walking, climbing stairs, getting out of a chair or sleeping comfortably—difficult.
Total Hip Replacement Surgery at MIOT International is designed to relieve pain, restore movement and help patients regain independence when severe damage to the hip joint can no longer be managed effectively with non-surgical treatment.
With extensive experience in primary hip replacement, complex hip reconstruction and revision hip replacement, MIOT provides personalised surgical care backed by specialised orthopaedic expertise and comprehensive rehabilitation.
What Is Total Hip Replacement?
The hip is a ball-and-socket joint. The upper end of the thigh bone forms the ball, while a part of the pelvis forms the socket. Healthy cartilage allows these surfaces to move smoothly against each other. When the cartilage or underlying bone becomes severely damaged, movement may become painful and restricted.
During a Total Hip Replacement, the damaged portions of the hip joint are removed and replaced with carefully selected artificial components called a hip prosthesis.
The treatment aims to:
Relieve Pain
Reduce pain caused by severely damaged joint surfaces.
Restore Mobility
Improve the movement and function of the hip.
Correct Deformity
Address problems such as altered hip mechanics or differences in limb length where appropriate.
Improve Independence
Make everyday activities such as walking, standing and climbing stairs easier.
Improve Quality of Life
Help patients return to a more comfortable and active lifestyle.
When Is Hip Replacement Recommended?
Total Hip Replacement may be considered when the hip joint has become severely damaged and other forms of treatment no longer provide adequate relief.
Common conditions include:
Osteoarthritis
Progressive wearing away of the cartilage can cause pain, stiffness and restricted movement.
Rheumatoid Arthritis
Long-term inflammation may progressively damage the cartilage and other structures of the hip joint.
Avascular Necrosis
Loss of blood supply to the head of the thigh bone can weaken the bone and eventually cause collapse of the hip joint.
Hip Fractures
Certain severe fractures, particularly involving the neck of the femur, may require replacement of part or all of the hip joint.
Developmental or Congenital Hip Disorders
Abnormal development of the hip may eventually lead to premature joint degeneration, deformity and pain.
Severe Hip Joint Damage
Previous injuries, deformities or other conditions affecting the joint may progressively compromise hip function.
Minimally Invasive Hip Replacement at MIOT
Where clinically appropriate, MIOT performs hip replacement using minimally invasive surgical techniques designed to minimise unnecessary damage to the surrounding tissues.
Potential advantages for appropriately selected patients may include:
Smaller surgical exposure
Reduced soft-tissue disruption
Earlier mobilisation
Faster functional recovery
Shorter hospital stay
Earlier return to everyday activities
Not every patient requires or is suitable for the same surgical approach. The technique is selected based on the patient’s anatomy, bone condition and complexity of the procedure.
Revision Hip Replacement
When a Previous Hip Replacement Needs Another Surgery
Artificial hip joints are designed for long-term function, but an existing implant may sometimes need to be revised.
Revision Hip Replacement involves removing or replacing part or all of a previous hip prosthesis.
Revision surgery may be required because of:
Implant loosening
Wear of the artificial joint
Bone loss around the implant
Recurrent instability or dislocation
Infection
Fracture around the implant
Implant damage or failure
Persistent pain associated with a previous replacement
Revision hip replacement is more complex than a first-time replacement because surgeons may need to manage existing implants, reduced bone stock, altered anatomy and changes from previous surgery.
MIOT has extensive experience in managing complex revision hip replacement and reconstructive procedures.

Personalised Implant Selection
Implants are selected based on the patient’s bone quality, anatomy, age, activity level and clinical requirements.
Comprehensive Rehabilitation
Orthopaedic surgery is supported by rehabilitation focused on restoring mobility, strength and independence.
Your Recovery Starts Early
Hip replacement is only one part of the journey.
Rehabilitation plays an important role in helping patients regain strength, balance, mobility and confidence after surgery.
Depending on your condition, rehabilitation may include:
Standing and walking
Gait training
Strengthening exercises
Improving hip movement
Balance training
Stair climbing
Guidance on everyday activities
Gradual return to normal routines
At MIOT, eligible patients may begin mobilisation within hours following surgery under medical and rehabilitation supervision.
Recovery varies between individuals depending on age, overall health, muscle strength, bone condition and the complexity of surgery.
